Good morning everyone,
Respected Principal, teachers, and my dear friends, today I feel extremely honored to stand before you and talk about one of the most important days in the history of our nation — 15th August, the day when India attained its independence from British rule in 1947.
Independence Day is not just a date on the calendar; it is a celebration of freedom, sacrifice, and unity. It is a reminder of the countless heroes who fought bravely and gave their lives so that we could live in a free and independent country. Every year on this day, we hoist our national flag, sing the national anthem, and remember the great leaders and freedom fighters who made it possible for us to live with dignity and pride.
India’s struggle for independence was long and arduous, spanning almost two centuries of colonial rule. The British East India Company initially came to India for trade in the early 1600s, but gradually, their control extended to large parts of India. The people of India endured exploitation, discrimination, and injustice. But the spirit of freedom was alive, and the people never lost hope.
Many freedom fighters emerged during this struggle. Names like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmibai, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and many others are etched in the pages of history as symbols of courage and patriotism. Mahatma Gandhi, especially, showed us the power of non-violent resistance through movements like the Salt March and the Quit India Movement. His philosophy of “Satyagraha” or peaceful protest inspired millions to rise against oppression without using violence.
After decades of struggle, on the midnight of 15th August 1947, India finally broke the chains of slavery and became a free nation. Our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, delivered his famous speech “Tryst with Destiny,” expressing hope for a new dawn for India. This historic moment filled the hearts of every Indian with immense pride and joy.
But freedom was not given on a silver platter; it came at a great cost. Millions of people sacrificed their lives, faced imprisonment, and endured hardships for this dream of freedom. Independence Day is, therefore, a tribute to their sacrifices. It also reminds us of the responsibility we have to uphold the values of democracy, justice, equality, and unity in our country.
Every year on 15th August, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi and addresses the nation. This tradition connects us all to the very beginning of our independent journey. Schools, colleges, and institutions across the country celebrate this day with flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, and patriotic songs. It is a time when people from all walks of life come together to show their love and respect for the nation.
Independence Day is not just about remembering the past; it is also about looking toward the future. As citizens of India, it is our duty to contribute positively to the progress and development of our country. We must respect our diversity and maintain harmony among the various communities, languages, and religions that make India so unique. Unity in diversity is our strength.
Moreover, as young citizens, we should focus on education, innovation, and hard work to build a prosperous India. We must fight against corruption, poverty, and social injustice. It is through our collective efforts that we can make India a superpower in the coming years.
Today, the world recognizes India as the largest democracy and one of the fastest-growing economies. We have made remarkable progress in science, technology, space exploration, and many other fields. Yet, there are challenges that we must overcome, such as environmental pollution, unemployment, and inequality. Independence Day serves as a reminder that our freedom is meaningful only when every citizen enjoys peace, prosperity, and dignity.
In conclusion, I would like to say that Independence Day is a day of pride, reflection, and renewal of our commitment to the nation. Let us honor the sacrifices of our freedom fighters by being responsible and patriotic citizens. Let us pledge to protect our country’s sovereignty, uphold its values, and work tirelessly for its growth.
Jai Hind!
Thank you.
